St George Illawarra forward Joel Thompson has been charged for his controversial high shot that broke Blake Austin's nose in Thursday night's golden point win over Canberra.

Thompson is facing at least one week on the sidelines after being stung with a grade one careless high tackle by the match review committee on Friday.

The tackle went unpunished by the referees during the game and then wasn't reviewed by the bunker, a week after NRL coaches moved to limit the bunker's involvement in live play.
